DHEC: Rabid cat found in Upstate

Avoid wild animals acting tame and tame animals acting wild, said Sue Ferguson of DHEC’s Bureau of Environmental Health.

About 275 South Carolinians are advised to undergo preventive treatment for rabies every year, with most exposures from being bitten or scratched by a rabid or suspected rabid animal. Wild animals carry the disease most often, but domestic pets can contract rabies as well. Stray animals should be avoided as they can carry the disease.

While this is the second confirmed rabid animal of the year in Spartanburg County, five rabid animals were confirmed there last year.

There were 107 confirmed cases of animal rabies during 2011 in South Carolina.

Federal government merges five quarantine centres into one

The Federal Government has announced almost $380 million in funding for a new quarantine centre for plant and animal imports.

The centre will be in Melbourne, Victoria, and will integrate five existing services on a central site.

The Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry has confirmed the centre will be the central hub for all animal and plant imports into Australia including breeding stock and domestic pets.

In the previous budget money was allocated for design work, and funds were put aside to buy land.

The project will mean construction jobs and the re-location of additional staff to Melbourne with existing stations to begin closing from 2015.
