iemens PLM Introduces Big Data

Sunday, April 15th, 2012

Siemens PLM Software, a business unit of the Siemens Industry Automation Division and a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, announces a new product in the Teamcenter software portfolio called Active Workspace, an intuitive, highly visual, and personalized environment for instantly accessing intelligent 3D information and thereby greatly enhancing the value of PLM systems. Active Workspace is another important step towards realizing Siemens PLM Softwares High Definition PLM (HD-PLM) vision, which was established to help decision makers make better informed decisions more efficiently and with a higher level of confidence.

Today, many companies have massive amounts of information generated throughout their product lifecycle processes, which currently lies dormant, often spread across many sites and several different unconnected databases. This information could potentially be used to enhance decision making. However, finding, understanding and acting on all of this information can be difficult, time consuming and ultimately expensive. Active Workspace, working in conjunction with other Siemens PLM Softwares technology, provides an efficient solution by bringing all of this information together in instantly available visual representations that enable comprehension and quality decision-making to drive innovation.
All companies and individuals face the challenge of dealing with information overload due to the increasing speed and volume of data coming from multiple sources, says Chuck Grindstaff, CEO, Siemens PLM Software. Active Workspace helps companies manage this challenge and significantly enhances decision making by reducing complexity and intelligently presenting PLM information that is accessible for all users. Building on our HD-PLM vision, Active Workspace creates an intuitive and personalized 3D graphic interface that significantly enhances the ability of our PLM suite of offerings to deliver knowledge instantly to the right people, at the right place and in the right context to support rapid and intelligent decision making.

Turning product complexity into a competitive advantage
As product complexity continues to increase, the PLM systems that support the design, development and manufacturing of these products continue to expand to handle more data, functions and users. Visualizing information is crucial to understanding this complexity, whether information is textual, a network diagram of related items, or a complex 3D product design. Active Workspace provides easy to use tools for visualizing and navigating information and, once the right information is found, easily saving or sharing it with others.

The constant increase in product complexity creates a need for a strong multi-disciplinary decision support platform that makes information exchange and collaboration simple, intuitive and effective, said Joe Barkai, Practice Director, Product Lifecycle Strategies, IDC Manufacturing Insights. A dynamic decision support system, like Active Workspace, creates rich technical and business context to enable intelligent, high-fidelity decision making.

Active Workspace is highly scalable and can handle all types and sizes of PLM environments, from hundreds to millions of items of information, and from a massive collection of documents to complex 3D geometry. Active Workspace helps turn this complexity into a competitive advantage by using the built-in filtering capability to provide immediate results, enabling fast, high-performance visualization of the 3D data and combining it with relevant product information to proactively assist users in making good decisions.

Smart collaboration is an integral part of the system – assisting users in finding relevant team members who need to be involved in a given task or decision. Active Workspace simplifies the process of sharing the data needed to make a decision so it can be re-used in the future to leverage best practices for similar tasks.

Will Subscription Sample Boxes Work for Women of Color?

Saturday, April 14th, 2012

With the success of subscription sampling companies, we are seeing social commerce related businesses popping up all over the web. You can subscribe to get everything delivered monthly to your door from beauty products to baby products and jewelry. I even found a box called Manpacks that delivers socks and underwear quarterly to men (I know a few brothers that could benefit from this one). The biggest success in the social commerce food chain is Birchbox. The company was started by two Harvard business school graduates in 2009.The question is, will this business model work for women of color? According to Womens Wear Daily, women of color currently spend 7.5 million dollars on beauty products a year. Thats 80 percent more than any other group. Why? Because as women of color we have to sample so many products to find the right ones. Subscription sampling boxes appeal to both product vendors and consumers. It allows consumers to sample products that can then convert them into loyal customers. It also adds as market research for vendors. The problem is that many companies that target women of color dont make sample sizes and would rather you just purchase the product full size based on reputation. The majority of women outside major cities buy their products from drug stores and beauty supply stores that will not take back products once opened, creating the product graveyard under the sink. Everyone knows how serious sistas are about their hair. I personally get a headache every time I go to the beauty supply store looking for something for my own hair. Most of the beauty supply stores in America are Korean owned, and they usually cannot answer my questions or understand my needs. In the age of new media, beauty bloggers have become our biggest source for product information., because they sample the products prior to reviewing. I caught up with several beauty bloggers, and asked them what was behind their inspiration for wanting to start their blogs, and if subscription sampling will work.

Amber McKinnon: www.brownbombshellbeauty.com Im orginally from Kansas City, Missouri, and my biggest inspiration for starting my blog was the lack of resources there. It was my desire to be a beauty resource for women of color. I felt that women could make better beauty purchases and feel confident creating their own beauty regimen if they were armed with good information. I wanted to share what I knew about beauty, as well as what products worked well for us and our specific beauty needs. I feel that subscription sampling boxes are a great addition to helping women make educated choices in picking products.

Lakish A Campbell: www.blaqvixenbeauty.com Im originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and growing up I was a tom boy so I never really followed beauty trends. This is the same philosophy I follow today with my blog. My advice comes very organically, and I have to believe in a product to recommend it. Women see right through black beauty bloggers that only recommend products because they are endorsed. So I, in this aspect, see myself as a non-beauty beauty blogger. I think subscription sampling is a great concept because it teaches women not to be scared of products.

Several boxes have already hit the ground running and others will be launching soon. Is this something that women of color find relevant; and, if so, will they subscribe? I caught up with the creators of Curlbox (www.curlbox.com) and My Shade of Brown (www.myshadesofbrown.com) about their inspiration and company vision.

Myleik Teele/curlBOX:www.curlbox.com After catching wind of other sampling programs, I knew that women with kinky-coily hair needed this service more than anyone. Women of color are completely thrilled about curlBOX. We get emails all the time from women that say Thank you for thinking of us. I used to try products all the time that bloggers swore by just to get them and I would be disappointed. CurlBOX was created to lessen the disappointment . If you get something you dont really love, you wont feel bad because it didnt take up much of your money or time, and you get to try new things youve never heard of.

Meki Adefria/My Shade of Brown:www.myshadesofbrown.com A lot of women I knew including myself had what I like to call a beauty junkyard. Women of color have to sample so many products to find ones that are just right for us. This was my inspiration behind starting my company. The official launch was in February, and the response has been overwhelming.

Launching in the near future are other subscription boxes such as Hue Beauty and Sasha.
I also asked several women of color to share their needs and thoughts regarding the emergence of social commerce, and its impact in this specific market. Check out the slide show to hear what they had to say.

Toshiba Marks 25th Anniversary of Invention of NAND Flash Technology

Saturday, April 14th, 2012

IRVINE, CA, Apr 03, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) –
Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)*, a committed
leader that collaborates with technology companies to create
breakthrough designs, today announced that it has reached a milestone
– 2012 marks the 25th anniversary of Toshiba’s invention of NAND
flash memory.

Much has changed since 1987 — the NAND flash market has grown
rapidly, with flash memory shipping almost 8X more gigabytes (GB) in
2011 than DRAM. NAND flash has become the high density silicon
storage of choice. NAND flash memory is used in a variety of memory
cards and USB drives, and is found in many consumer, industrial and
enterprise cloud applications. Toshiba’s innovation has carved out a
path to a new era in which consumers are able to carry videos, music,
books and data with them wherever they go. Designed with a very small
cell size to enable a low cost-per-bit of stored data,Toshiba’s NAND
flash technology is unleashing the mobility of content, thus fueling
innovation in the development of products for everyone from consumers
to enterprise.

“NAND flash has truly permeated our lives — this technology has been
a game changer, making the world a different place and making many of
the products we use today possible,” noted Scott Nelson, vice
president, Memory Business Unit, TAEC. “The cost/performance of NAND
flash continues to stand the test of time. NAND flash is leading the
way to thin and light hardware, has made the mobility of content
possible, and is enabling ‘green’ storage in the data centers.”

Toshiba’s commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the invention of
NAND flash will continue throughout 2012. Included in the celebration
will be notable industry events and consumer participation — an
interactive campaign that embraces industry voices and experiences
exploring the impact of NAND flash is forthcoming. For more

Vision system captures images of packaged products

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

At last month’s Anuga FoodTec fair held in Cologne, Germany, Mettler-Toledo CI-Vision (Aurora, IL, USA) took the wraps off a new system designed to verify and inspect labels on packaged products.

The so-called Ultra LS system uses a pair of line-scan cameras to capture images of the top and bottom of food products simultaneously, while adjusting for products ranging from 25 mm to 100 mm in height.

The parameters of the products to be inspected can be configured by an operator using a touch-screen menu on the systems human machine interface (HMI) screen. To do so, the system features pre-set label recipes containing weight, pricing and other product information, facilitating quick product changeovers.

The Ultra LS comes with an optional automatic reject system that can be customized according to product and packaging type for removal of substandard products from a production process.

Food labeling initiatives and EU Regulation 1169/2011 are making it increasingly necessary for food manufacturers to ensure that their products are correctly labeled with clear and legible consumer information, said Ralph Swinka, Head of Marketing of Mettler-Toledo’s product inspection division in Germany.

At the show, the company also exhibited its full bottle inspection system, which allows the fill level and caps (missing, wrong or over tightened caps, security ring integrity) of filled bottles to be checked. If the optical inspection system detects a defective bottle, it is automatically gated out of the production line.

Ventana Research Launches Product Information Management Benchmark Research

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

SAN RAMON, CA, March 13, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ — Ventana Research is set to begin new benchmark research on the current state and maturity of product information management.

As products are added to retail and distributor networks and to catalogs and also web and mobile commerce sites, additional product information must be created, referenced and managed efficiently, which is where product information management comes into play. Competitive pressures require that the product information presented to customers be both up-to-date and accurate, so organizations must maintain a common set of information to ensure the efficient manufacturing, marketing and selling of products and services.

In this new benchmark research, Ventana Research will determine progress and identify emerging best practices associated with use of product information management in the past few years and the plans for the coming years. It will explore organizations best practices and experiences with deployments of PIM systems and the challenges they have faced in efforts to align business and IT resources and spending with business objectives. The results of this research will be compared to Ventana Researchs previous benchmark research on PIM, which found that less than one-quarter of organizations were fully mature in their use of product information.

Product information is increasingly difficult to manage and organizations are always seeking ways to improve their efforts to reduce costly errors and time in existing processes, said Mark Smith, CEO and Chief Research Officer of Ventana Research. The unfortunate confusion on the applications and technology approach has hampered new efforts. This benchmark will establish the best practices and education to bring together business and IT efforts to improve product information management in the most efficient and cost effective manner.

Those interested in learning more about this benchmark research can do so at http://www.ventanaresearch.com/pim/. As a part of your registration you will receive insights and education from Ventana Research on using technology effectively in business. In addition Ventana Research is assessing the vendors and products to determine their applicability to business and IT needs in what is called the Value Index for Product Information Management for 2012. The Value Index for 2011 can be found at http://www.ventanaresearch.com/pimvalueindex .
